Spray Foam Attic Insulation Is The Most Efficient

Many people move into a new home and don’t check to see where the insulation progress is. It may be a shock to hear this but many homes are only barely insulated and only in the walls and partially in the attic with fiberglass insulation. What makes this bad is that most of their air (from air conditioners and furnaces) is being wasted because instead of incubating in the home and keeping the temperature at a constant, it’s being generated then quickly escapes out the ceiling and outside through the various cracks and openings in the attic.

Many homes have insulation in both areas but still have a slight problem with efficiency, maybe more than slight in many cases. This is due to the way that fiberglass insulation tends to leave spaces where some, not all, air can escape. If the attic and ceiling aren’t properly insulated, the air can escape and outside temperatures permeate the home as well.

The best solution is to use spray foam attic insulation. This type of insulation is powerful and rigid, but most importantly it’s sprayed in and expands to cover the entire area. If you spray a bunch in a crevice and spray more next to it, the two foam areas expand and end up sticking to each other, they merge before it dries and create an impenetrable barrier (from insects, air tight, and weather) that assures you your attic is not robbing you of your power and conditioned air.

You can use spray foam insulation as well in walls, inside hallow doors, garage doors can also be sprayed to make sure the beating heat isn’t transferring and heating the air in the garage. This is usually why the garage is much hotter than even outside on a hot day and can be freezing on a cold day. Heat and cold can transfer into the metal of your garage door and heat up the air surrounding the door. Over time it works like a reverse oven. If you insulate the garage door, you remove the problem.

It’s always a good idea to check the insulation all over the house, because it must all work together to keep the air in and outside air out. The more efficient your home is insulated, the less you need to use power to turn on the air. In a central heat and air system, this is optimal as most of the time the air won’t need to stay on. In a perfect scenario the heater or cooler should only have to come on once every few hours, not constantly.
